Genuine StudenT STATEMENT(GS)
What Is IT?
and How Do You Write One?
If you are planning to study in Australia, one of the most important parts of your student visa application is the Genuine Student (GS) statement. This written statement helps demonstrate that you are genuinely coming to Australia to study, and that you understand the responsibilities and expectations involved.
What Is the GS Requirement?
The GS requirement is used by the Australian Government to determine whether an international student has genuine intentions to study in Australia. It ensures that student visas are granted only to people who are committed to studying and understand what is involved in the experience—both academically and personally.
The GS statement gives you a chance to explain:
- Your personal background and current situation
- Why you have chosen your course and education provider
- How the course fits into your future plans
- Any other information that helps show you are a genuine student
The GS requirement applies to all student visa applicants, and your answers are considered as part of your visa assessment.
How to Write Your GS Statement
You will be asked to respond to specific questions when preparing your GS statement. Each answer should be up to 150 words and written in English. Here’s what you need to cover:
- Your Current Circumstances
Describe your current situation in your home country. This includes your family ties, employment, financial situation, and anything that shows you are connected to your home country. The goal is to show that you are not just looking for a way to move abroad permanently, but that you have a clear reason for studying and returning home afterward.
- Why You Chose This Course and Education Provider
Explain why you picked your specific course and the institution in Australia. Be clear about how you found the course, what attracted you to it, and why Australia is the best place for you to study this subject. You should also show that you understand what the course involves and what it means to live and study in Australia.
- How the Course Will Benefit You
Describe how completing the course will help your future—career-wise, personally, or academically. You can mention your career goals, job opportunities in your home country, or any personal development you’re aiming for.
- Other Relevant Information
This is your opportunity to include anything else that helps demonstrate your genuine intention to study. This might include past education, work experience, or reasons for changing your field of study. If something in your application might raise questions (e.g., a study gap or a career change), this is the place to explain it.
Optional: Upload Additional Documents
If you believe your answers don’t fully explain your situation, you can upload extra documents to support your statement. For example, a personal letter, a CV, or a written explanation of special circumstances. This step is optional but can strengthen your application.
