What can I do on a Student Visa in Australia?
A Student Visa (subclass 500) allows you to:
- Study a short or long-term course in Australia
- Gain an internationally recognised qualification
- Work up to 48 hours per fortnight during study periods, and full-time during holidays
- Bring your partner and children as dependants
- Travel in and out of Australia while your visa is valid
What is the process to apply for a student visa?
- Choose a course – Select a CRICOS-registered course
- Receive a COE – Your Confirmation of Enrolment from the education provider
- Prepare documents – GTE statement, health cover, proof of funds
- Lodge visa application – Submit online through the Department of Home Affairs
- Wait for a decision – Response times vary
- Plan your travel – If approved, organise your arrival
Can I bring my family with me?
Yes. You can include:
- Your spouse or de facto partner
- Your dependent children
You’ll need to provide evidence of your relationship and sufficient funds to support all applicants during your stay.
How long is the visa granted for?
- Courses longer than 10 months finishing in Nov/Dec: visa granted until 15 March the following year
- Courses over 10 months finishing Jan–Oct: visa granted for the course duration plus 2 months
- Courses under 10 months: visa granted for course duration plus 1 month
What are the financial requirements?
To demonstrate financial capacity, you must show access to:
- Tuition for 12 months (or full course if shorter)
- Living costs (~AUD 29,710 for a single student)
- Return airfare (~AUD 2,000–3,000)
If bringing family, you must show additional funds for your partner and each child.
Do I need English or health checks?
- English language: Required for some passport holders or course types
- Health checks: Required depending on your nationality and personal background
- Character checks: Police certificates may be requested
Can I extend or renew my visa?
Yes, if continuing your studies. You can also package courses under one visa to extend your stay. However, multiple renewals may weaken your Genuine Student status, so plan carefully.
